Backing a single social innovation, social entrepreneur, or organization and believing that it alone can make a difference at the level of change that’s needed is no longer serving us. We need to find where individual effort can yield to aligned action in order to transform systems. We need to double down on the Theory of We.

In any field where systemic change is in play, there will always be:

  • A diverse set of actors fueled by different articulations of the problem and diverging theories of change

  • Organizational interests that may be complementary, competitive, or even in conflict

  • Resources that will be distributed unevenly, creating competition which can thwart more strategic coordination.

Figuring out how to build bridges and forge connections, grounded in trust between people doing the hard work of change, is central to any system-shifting effort. It is the type of work that is needed now more than ever.

Tough problems defy “I” interventions.
They will transform under the Theory of We.
